Personality & Traits

General Overview Excerpt from official personality profile for Ileana Ramirez:

All else being equal, this personality type enjoys being in charge. They see problems clearly and delegate easily, work hard and play hard. They bear strong allegiance to rights of seniority. They willingly provide service (which embodies life's meaning) and expect the same from others.

However, they are easily wounded. And when wounded, their emotions will not be contained. They by nature "wear their hearts on their sleeves," Their sense of right and wrong wrestles with an overwhelming rescuing, 'mothering' drive. This sometimes results in swift immediate action taken upon a transgressor, followed by stern reprimand, usually followed by a sense of regret.

Because of their innate dislike for conflict with superiors, they often strive to hide their own perceived shortcomings, make excused for those under their immediate command, or try to solve the conflicts themselves without asking for additional help.

In a concerted effort to overcome her innate personality weaknesses, Ileana has a goal, with this posting, of becoming more bold, honest and straightforward with those in the command structure. In other words, she wants to learn how to stand up for herself better. On a personal note, and though, she wouldn’t admit it to anyone, one goal is to maintain her composure, and to keep thoughts of Tony at bay.

Personal History Ileana was born Maria-Ileana Castel i Cali in 2357, on the island of Mallorca, just east of Spain. She loved the rolling hills that bordered the shimmering blue Mediterranean Sea. She especially loved her grandmother’s cozy, comfortable home that perched high on a hill overlooking the small village of Binibona. Unfortunately, she rarely got the opportunity to visit. Her father served as a doctor in Starfleet. Ileana spent most of her childhood living on several space stations and a myriad of colonies. Only on the rare occasion that her father took leave, did she get to visit with her grandmother.

One day, at the age of eight, Ileana brought home an adorable, but injured small mammal, akin to an earth cat. Pleading with her dad to make it better, she cried when it died, and bellowed out that she didn’t want to become a doctor. She wanted to become a vet, so she could make animals better.

In 2375, at the age of eighteen, she enrolled in the Nursing Program at Starfleet Medical, and graduated four years later. Her first assignment was aboard the USS Valkyrie. Three years later, in 2381, Ileana received a promotion and a new assignment on Echelon Station in the Raeyon Sector, TF58. She was, on occasion, called upon to serve on short-term missions on the flagship of the station. It afforded her some well-needed experience in emergency medical situations, as well as some leadership practice.

However, the best part of Echelon Station, was her chance meeting with Tony Ramirez. If she hadn’t traded one of her duty shifts with another nurse, she may have never crossed paths with this incredibly cute JAG officer. Seems he’d gotten injured in one of the holodeck simulations. There’d been a power surge and the safeties had been temporarily disengaged at the very moment Toni’s rappelling rope snapped as he was sliding down into a large opening of a cavern. In 2383 they were married. Tony was transferred to Deep Space 9, and Ileana was fortunate enough to snag an opening as a nurse in the Infirmary.

The next four years went by quickly. Tony moved up the Starfleet ranks. Ileana’s career also surged, thanks to the individual mentoring of one head nurse, Sandi Scott. It was under tutelage that she got practice and training in leadership, and personnel management. Sandi scheduled her to actually teach a few courses to some newly arrived nurses and medics. Ack, she hated speaking in front of a crowd, but secretly appreciated the experience.

December, 2386, her world came crashing down. It began with answering a chirp to her combadge requesting her immediate presence in the Infirmary. She grabbed her lab coat, took a quick backward glance at the now burned-down candles and the untouched meal in the center of the table and exited the quarters. She walked in as the Chief Medical Officer was conferring with one of the surgeons. Surrounding a man lying on a biobed were several nurses whispering quietly. They looked up in unison as she approached the bed. “I’m sorry,” she would forever hate those words. No matter how sympathetically said, it didn’t alleviate the pain.

Tony died. It was a simple as that. And divorcing herself from deeper thought reduced the risk of loosing her composure. She was needed. Patients needed her; Sandi, her head nurse, needed her. Afterall, this was the life of a Starfleet Officer, wasn’t it? Life went on.

One morning, early in 2387, she got called to the Infirmary early. She’d been summoned, not by Sandi, but by the CMO. He quickly informed her that Sandi had been called back to earth to attend to a family emergency and he needed her to fill in as the head nurse aboard a newly commissioned ship…the USS Jericho. Orders had already been approved and she was to report aboard by the end of the day. He assured her it was a temporary assignment, until Sandi returned from her emergency leave. He went on to describe what an exceptional experience it was going to be for her career, and how he had such confidence in her ability. Basically, he left her no wiggle room to refuse. What was left for her to say, but “Ok.”
