Mission: The Fruit Of Tantalus
Location: U.S.S. Abeona: Deck 1 - Observations Lounge
Timeline: MD1 - 1400 Hours

Eric watched the shimmering lights on the turbolift as it ascended toward deck one. The rhythmic hum as it traversed each deck was soothing and helped to abate some of the nervousness he was feeling. Here he was - on a new assignment having graduated from the Academy not so long ago. The sole pip on his collar represented his youth and lack of experience. Looking down, he made one final precursory check of his uniform, just to make sure everything was within regulations.

The turbolift doors opened to reveal the bridge. He walked over to the door leading to the Observation Lounge, in a distinct effort to not draw attention to himself.

He walked into the observation lounge, and approached the Captain.

"Ensign Compton, reporting as ordered, sir!" He came to attention briskly, with a sharp continence, as he had been practiced on the Academy parade grounds so many times before. At least now no one was screaming at him or questioning his intelligence, appearance, or parentage."

The commanding officer of the Abeona stood from her seat and smiled at the young man who'd just entered. "At ease Ensign," she told him. Udiel then extended a hand to one of the chairs at the table. "Please have a seat. I hope that your stay here has been a comfortable one, even if it has been short."

Eric nodded: "Yes, sir. Quite comfortable." He glanced away, nervously, before returning to look at the Captain: "So I understand that you have information regarding my new assignment, ma'am?"

Udiel's antennae arched forward a bit and she sat back down in her chair. "I do," she answered. "You've been assigned to the Jericho. She's... in an unusual predicament at the moment. The Abeona is bringing you to the transfer location at listening post G11LN."

Eric's head turned, quizzically. "Unusual predicament, ma'am?" Inside, he braced himself for what was probably going to be difficult to hear.

The Andorian nodded. "For the past four months, the Jericho has been in another universe." Udiel slid a PADD to the medical officer which contained some information about the Dax Protouniverse. "The ship was pulled into it by a force unknown to them at the time. They met an alien civilization known as the Lumenites who claimed that it was the Jericho's destiny to save them. Since their initial arrival, they've been trying to apprehend a supernatural being known as Veriathan."

Compton glanced at the PADD and read some of the contents, as the Captain spoke. He shook his head in disbelief. "With respect ma'am, how am I supposed to report to this ship if they're in another universe? How do we know they're there?"

Udiel expected that to be the next question. "Based on the technology that the Lumenites used to pull the Jericho into their universe, the crew constructed a device that allowed them to communicate with the listening post that I've already mentioned. Since then, they've increased the technology's capabilities to include the transporters. Captain Rismore has informed us that the entire sequence will take a little longer than normal, but that it should be relatively harmless. You will be transferring there via this method, along with a number of other new crewmembers."

Compton nodded. "I see." He felt a sudden queasiness in his stomach. Using strange technology to be transported to a different universe was a little more than he signed up for, when he was commissioned an officer in Starfleet. "With respect sir, is this safe?"

The Andorian nodded. "It should be. Lieutenant Commander Stross has been testing it for the last few months using various inanimate objects. Barring the early tests, he and his people were able to 'get all the kinks out' of the technology. They believe that there shouldn't be any unforeseen incidents. In the event that something does go wrong, Doctor Myers will be waiting on the other side to give you a once over."

Compton gave a final nod, "Alright, when will I beam over?"

"We are due to arrive at the listening post tomorrow morning," Udiel informed him. "You will be notified when we are ready to proceed. In the meantime, I'd like you to visit our sickbay and have a complete physical done. If something does happen to go wrong, we want to give the Jericho's medical personnel the most up to date information on your vitals."

"Aye, Captain" Compton replied. "Permission to go to Sickbay, sir." There seemed to be little else to say.

"You're dismissed, Ensign," Udiel granted. "Feel free to use the Abeona's facilities while you are here."

Nodding, Eric walked out of the conference room and prepared to head to Sickbay.
